A German research institute offers research and development for bioplastics material, bioplastics compounding and bioplastics processing using renewable resources. This topic comprises plastics derived from biomass as well as biodegradable plastics. Applications are in plastics processing, packaging, agriculture, forest, consumer and automotive industry. Their department dealing with bio-based plastics is focused on polymer chemistry, material development, plastics processing, applications, and industrial scale-up of novel bio-plastics. Here they develop and optimize bio-based plastics, technical processes for the production and processing of applied-orientated, bio-based plastics and bring them into plastics applications. They have more than ten years of experience in the development of tailor-made bio-plastics compounds. The scientists and engineers use raw biopolymers, like PLA, CA, or PHA, and combine them in a twin-screw compounding process with plasticizers, fillers, additives and, if appropriate, other polymers to develop specific blends that meet the customers' needs. Their material development focuses especially on demand, with the intent that the product can be used on standard plastics-processing machinery. A couple of bio-based plastics developed at this institute are successful on the market in film, extrusion and injection moulding applications in fields like packaging, cases and houses and structural components. The institute and its industrial partners are continuously investigating novel and innovative bio-based plastics compounds.
